Beyond Stonehenge: Exploring the Wiltshire Countryside by E-Bike

For many visitors, Stonehenge is the reason they first come to Wiltshire. And rightly so.

But one of the best things about this part of the world is that some of its best experiences begin once you follow the road less travelled.

Ten or fifteen minutes from the crowds, the landscape changes completely. Quiet chalk lanes wind between villages, ancient drove roads cut across open downland, and suddenly you are in a part of southern England that still feels remarkably untouched.

That is exactly the sort of countryside we explore at Cranborne Chase Escapes.

A Slower Way to Experience Wiltshire

E-bikes are a surprisingly perfect way to experience the Cranborne Chase.

The electric assist allows people to cover more ground comfortably, while still remaining connected to the landscape in a way that simply is not possible in a car.

You notice the smell of wild garlic in spring. Skylarks and red kites above the downs. Hidden valleys, old churches and tiny villages that most visitors miss out on.

And because the bikes flatten the hills just enough, the rides remain accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities.

The Chalke Valley

Many of our bike rides centre around the Chalke Valley near Salisbury. Tucked between the A30 and A354 lies a hidden gem that most people will pass without even knowing it’s there!

This part of Wiltshire feels almost made for relaxed cycling with it’s quiet lanes, rolling chalk hills and some of the loveliest villages in the south west.

Depending on the route, rides may pass through places such as Broad Chalke, Berwick St John, or even up to Win Green - one of the highest points in the Cranborne Chase National Landscape.

There is usually a pub stop involved somewhere too of course

Guided or Self-Guided

Some guests prefer the freedom of a self-guided ride, using carefully planned routes via OS Maps on a phone mounted to the handlebars.

Others opt for a guided ride, allowing us to tailor the day around exactly what they are after — whether that is scenic countryside exploring, gentle off-road riding or simply finding the best lunch stop in the valley.

Easy Access from London

One thing many guests do not realise is how accessible the area is from London.

With direct trains to Salisbury and station pick-up available, it works remarkably well as either a day trip or a countryside weekend.

Family-Friendly Options

Families are very welcome.

We have trailer and towing options available for younger children (minimum age for riding an e-bike is 14), alongside routes that can easily be adapted depending on confidence and experience.

More Than a Bike Ride

At its best, an e-bike ride here becomes less about cycling and more about discovering a different side of Wiltshire.

A slower pace. Big skies. Quiet roads. Excellent pubs.

And the sort of countryside that rewards wandering slightly off the obvious route.
